Bill Bixby - THE MAGICIAN - 1973 - Scene from the Pilot - Kim Hunter
Scene from the pilot of "The Magician" 1973 TV series starring the great Bill Bixby as Anthony Dorian (later Tony Blake); Keene Curtis as columnist Max Pomeroy; Todd Crespi as his son, Dennis Pomeroy; Joan Caulfield as Dennis' mother and Max's companion, Lulu; and guest starring Kim Hunter as Nora Coogan, the dame in distress.
Anthony Dorian helps Mrs. Coogan find out what happened to her daughter Mary-Rose, who is presumed dead.
This scene features the famous cheesy line "If anyone can find Mary-Rose, and I love that name, Tony can!" Keene Curtis delivers with a theatrical flair. Joan Caulfield is ravishing as the quirky Lulu. Kim Hunter's Nora is a bit the deer in the headlights. Dennis is Todd Crespi's refreshing down-to-earth counterpart to his kooky parents. And Anthony Dorian is the noble and dashing magician who doesn't hesitate to get involved to help others.
This scene also prominently features Max Pomeroy's antique-style telephone, one of the great props of the pilot for "The Magician". (In subsequent episodes, Max will use an ordinary red telephone.) The characters spent a great deal of time on the phone.
We almost had a goof in this scene but not quite: Max requests "lights!" and appears to flick the switch himself but if we look closely we can tell that it's actually Dennis who controlled the lights from a nub to the right side of his monitor. It does make it seem like Max is crazy as a loon! And that's not too far from his personality as portrayed by the great--and late--Keene Curtis.
As with most of Bill Bixby's TV series, the production was fond of using crew names as character names. Here we have "Wilson in L.A." on the phone. This is of course a reference to Mark Wilson, magic consultant for "The Magician". Website to open in 2009 with much more facts and trivia about "The Magician" 1973 TV series.
